Do not fill in the blank

For some odd reason many moving image publishers feel they need to fill in blank space to the left and right of a vertical video but this is a bad idea. In looking at this wonderful report by about what is called a dark sky reserve in Idaho, at this point in particular in the video the image split effect used in defocus to fill in each side creates a horrible distortion where the eye and brain is being given two sets of things to compute, one the real image, 2 the other which is a close up/split/defocused image of this man who then has his face split in two. It’s awful to watch this split. These effects are TOTALLY UNNECESSARY. We can see in this snapshot how bad this looks, and when it’s moving images it’s many frames per second worse to view.
